Renting a small van in Germany: when the compact class is enough
A small van is useful when your load is manageable and you want a compact vehicle. The decisive factors are not the model name or number of rooms, but actual cargo volume, interior dimensions and payload.

Boxes, dismantled small furniture, furniture purchases, individual appliances and manageable loads.
Long, tall or heavy items can become the limiting factor even when volume remains.
If many bulky items or a whole household should move in as few trips as possible.

Quick classification
How large is a small rental van?
“Small van” is not a legally standardised rental category. Current compact rental examples range roughly from 3.5 to 5.7 m³ of cargo volume. For planning, we therefore use about 3–6 m³ as a practical orientation range.

How much do actual small vans differ?
There are substantial differences even within the compact rental class. The examples below come from the current ADAC transporter fleet. ADAC notes that reservations are for a vehicle class and that models and dimensions are category examples rather than guarantees.
| Example | Cargo volume | L × W × H | Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD ETP3 | 3.49 m³ | 1.92 × 1.40 × 1.30 m | very compact |
| Mercedes-Benz Vito panel van | 4.0 m³ | 2.32 × 1.24 × 1.40 m | compact panel van |
| VW T6 | 5.7 m³ | 2.35 × 1.68 × 1.41 m | upper compact class |

What typically fits in a small van?
The compact class works best when the load is manageable and easy to stack. Typical use cases include moving boxes, dismantled shelving, chairs, a small table, tools, household appliances or a furniture purchase.
Furniture purchase, washing machine, smaller appliances or materials.
Limited furniture and boxes, provided the longest items fit the cargo area.
More manageable than large box bodies where narrow streets and parking matter.
For a home move, room count is only a rough starting point. Use our van-size guide to assess your actual load.
Cargo volume and payload are different limits
A small van can still have free space and already be at its weight limit. This matters especially for books, tools, tiles, drinks or other dense goods. Never infer permitted payload from cubic metres.
- Volume tells you how much space is available.
- Interior dimensions tell you whether the longest or tallest item fits.
- Payload tells you how much cargo weight is actually permitted.
Is a German category B licence enough?
For ordinary small vans with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg, German category B is generally sufficient. The decisive figure is always the authorised mass of the actual vehicle. Rental companies may additionally set their own minimum-age or licence-holding-period requirements.
When is a small van too small?
Do not automatically choose the smallest category just because it looks cheaper or easier to drive. A larger van can be the better choice if the longest item does not fit, many bulky pieces are involved or the small van would require several extra trips.

Labels such as “small van” or a model-class name do not guarantee a specific model or identical dimensions. On the actual offer, verify at least vehicle class, maximum authorised mass, included kilometres, deposit, insurance and return conditions.
