Which factors determine the number of moving boxes?

Floor area describes the available space, not its contents. A minimally furnished home and a home filled over many years can require very different numbers of boxes even at the same size.

  • Number of people and rooms
  • How long the household has existed
  • Amount of books, files and clothing
  • Size and contents of the kitchen
  • Cellar, attic, garage or garden
  • Household items already decluttered
  • Box sizes used
02

Which box types are useful?

Box typeSuitable forPlanning note
Standard moving boxGeneral household contents, clothing and toysDo not overload with heavy books
Book boxBooks, files and foldersUse a smaller box so it remains manageable
Wardrobe boxHanging clothesLarge volume but comparatively low weight
Dish boxGlasses, plates and porcelainFill gaps and protect against impacts
Special boxPictures, monitors, bottles or plantsUse only where actually needed
03

Why should book boxes be smaller?

Books have a high weight relative to their volume. Several smaller boxes are usually easier to carry and secure than a few very large ones. The actual load limit still depends on the individual box and its condition.

04

How much planning reserve is sensible?

A reserve compensates for uncertainty but should not be hidden. The calculator offers 0% for very tight planning, 10% for balanced planning and 20% for a comfortable buffer. The base requirement always remains visible separately.

  • 0%: only with a well-known inventory
  • 10%: recommended starting point
  • 20%: for uncertain inventories or later repacking
05

Can used moving boxes be reused?

Stable used boxes can be reused sensibly. Check the base, taped seams, corners and moisture damage. Heavily deformed, torn or soft boxes are unsuitable for heavy or fragile contents. Paper and cardboard should be placed in the appropriate collection after use.

06

How do boxes, load volume and payload relate?

The box calculator estimates the volume of the recommended box types. This result can be transferred to the load-volume calculator and supplemented with furniture and appliances. The weight must then be checked separately against the payload of the specific vehicle.

  1. 1

    Plan box types and quantities.

  2. 2

Transfer box volume to the load-volume calculator.

  3. 3

Add furniture, appliances and special items.

  4. 4

Determine planning volume and vehicle class.

  5. 5

Check the estimated weight against the specific payload.

07

Which additional packing materials are useful?

Packing-material requirements depend on the number of boxes and fragile items. Tape, labels, packing paper, protective film, blankets, edge protectors and lashing straps should be kept as a separate shopping list.

  • Label boxes clearly by room and contents
  • Fill gaps without making boxes unnecessarily heavy
  • Separate fragile surfaces with blankets or suitable protective material
  • Secure the load in the vehicle with suitable restraint equipment

Lots of boxes but not enough hands?

If the box count is high, extra help with packing, carrying or the full move can make sense. Always agree the exact scope of work.

Frequently asked questions

Short and clear answers

How many boxes do I need per square metre?+

A fixed number per square metre is too rough. Floor area, people, time in the home, books, clothing, kitchen and storage areas should be considered together.

Is a 10% reserve always enough?+

No. Ten percent is a practical starting point, not a guarantee. More buffer can make sense for uncertain inventories or very mixed box sizes.

Can I pack books in normal moving boxes?+

Yes if the box and weight are suitable. Smaller book boxes are easier to carry and reduce the risk of overloading individual boxes.

Does the box count automatically determine the van size?+

Only partly. Boxes are one part of load volume. Furniture, appliances, irregular shapes, gaps and payload must also be considered.
