What do included, excess and unlimited mileage mean?

Included mileage is the distance already covered by the tariff. If the agreed allowance is exceeded, additional kilometres may be charged at the rate shown in the offer. An unlimited-mileage tariff removes that specific kilometre cap under the booked tariff, while all other rental conditions remain separate.

How many included kilometres does a move actually need?

Do not count only the distance between the old and new home. Once the rental vehicle is collected, the route can include an empty run to the loading address, repeated moving trips, refuelling or charging and the final return to the rental station.

A fixed percentage buffer does not fit every move. Add the additional journeys you can realistically foresee and then allow a small personal reserve.

How do you calculate excess mileage and the break-even point?

Limited tariff = base price + max(0, planned kilometres − included kilometres) × excess-kilometre rate.

Compare that result with the unlimited tariff. Fuel, one-way charges and other extras must still be added consistently to both options.

When does unlimited mileage tend to be useful?

It becomes more attractive for long-distance moves, multiple journeys or a route that is still uncertain. For a short and predictable local trip, a cheaper tariff with enough included mileage may be the better fit.

What does unlimited mileage not include?

Unlimited mileage only concerns the mileage rule. Fuel or charging, tolls, additional drivers, one-way fees, protection products, cross-border permission and the rental period can still have separate conditions or charges.

Why does the exact booking wording matter?

Mileage logic is not uniform. ADAC notes that offers include mileage according to the specific tariff and that extra kilometres can be charged when the allowance is limited. Europcar states that truck mileage limits vary by vehicle type and rental duration and that the total allowance is displayed during booking. SIXT distinguishes between a mileage package and unlimited mileage depending on the selection, while other cost items remain separate.

The relevant figure is therefore not a general market average but the mileage allowance and excess-mileage price shown in your booking confirmation.

What should be documented at pick-up and return?

Photograph the mileage, fuel or charge level and vehicle condition at both handovers. For a limited tariff, this makes the mileage calculation traceable. Good documentation is particularly useful when returning outside staffed opening hours.
