The cost logic

Five blocks determine the total

Base rental+Mileage+Fuel+Protection & extras+possible fees

Deposit separately: it is normally not a regular rental expense, but the payment headroom still needs to be available at pick-up.

Worked example

How the individual items become a total

The following figures are illustrative only and are not current market prices.

2 days × €69 base rental
€138
Extra mileage
€42
Fuel
€68
Protection
€36
Estimated total cost
€284

Put the daily rate in context

Why the lower daily rate can cost more

Compare offers for the same rental period and realistic route. A low daily rate says little if only a small mileage allowance is included.

Example A€59 / day

100 km included · €0.39 per extra km

At 300 km and 2 days: €196 before fuel and protection
Example B€74 / day

300 km included

At 300 km and 2 days: €148 before fuel and protection

These tariff figures are also illustrative only. The conditions of the specific offer are what matter for your decision.

Complete route

Which costs are often overlooked?

  • travel to the rental station and from the return point
  • additional loading and unloading trips
  • extra mileage above the tariff allowance
  • refuelling or charging before return
  • additional drivers or driver-related fees
  • one-way, station or equipment fees
  • additional rental time after a late return

Payment headroom

A deposit is not the same as a rental cost

A fully released deposit does not increase the final rental cost, but it can block card limit or funds. Check amount, accepted payment method and cardholder before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Short and clear answers

Is there a reliable average daily price?+

No single figure is reliable for every booking. Location, dates, vehicle class, mileage, insurance and availability all affect the total.

Is fuel included?+

Usually the tariff contains a fuel-return or charging rule rather than free fuel. Check the actual booking conditions.

Is the deposit part of the rental cost?+

Not if it is fully released, but it increases the payment capacity required at pick-up.

What can a late return cost?+

That depends on the rental agreement. Additional rental time, fees or loss of tariff benefits may apply. Contact the rental company as soon as a delay becomes likely.
