Renting a box van: when is a box-body moving van the better choice?

A box van offers a tall, largely rectangular load compartment and can be easier to stack than a panel van. But cubic metres are only one limit: on 3.5-tonne vehicles, payload, exterior dimensions and access to the load area can matter more.

Good fit

Lots of boxes, bulky furniture and moves where a more rectangular cargo area makes stacking easier.

Check carefully

On 3.5-tonne box vans, payload can be tight despite the large load volume. Calculate heavy cargo separately.

Tail lift?

A tail lift can make loading heavy individual items easier, but it is not guaranteed in every rental class.

Define the term first

A “moving van” is not automatically a box van

Moving van is a broad use-case term. It may mean a small van, a large panel van or a vehicle with a separate box body. A box van is useful because the load compartment sits as a separate body on the chassis and often provides straighter side walls and more usable width than a panel van.

How large are current 3.5-tonne box-van rental classes?

Concrete rental groups are more useful than one generic size. The following values are current examples and not a guarantee for a specific vehicle.

Rental-class exampleCargo area L × W × HLoad volumePayload
SIXT · 3.5 t box + tail liftmin. 4.10 × 2.10 × 2.10 mcalculated approx. 18.1 m³min. 676 kg
SIXT · 3.5 t box + tail lift + tachographmin. 4.37 × 2.10 × 2.25 mcalculated approx. 20.6 m³min. 815 kg
Europcar · medium truck up to 3.5 t with box bodymin. 4.35 × 2.03 × 2.09 mfrom 18.45 m³approx. 800–1,000 kg

SIXT states cargo dimensions and payload as minimums for each vehicle group; Europcar also lists minimum dimensions and ranges. The supplied model can differ, so the specific booking class and vehicle documents remain decisive.

02

Box van or Sprinter/Crafter-style panel van?

A box body is not automatically better simply because it offers more cubic metres. It changes the trade-offs.

DecisionPanel vanBox van
Stackingbody shape and wheel arches can reduce usable spaceoften straighter walls and a more rectangular floor
Driving & parkingusually narrower and closer to a car-like feelwider/taller; manoeuvring and height restrictions matter more
Long itemslong variants can offer substantial cargo lengthinternal length depends strongly on the box body
Heavy load at 3.5 tmay leave more payload reservebody and tail lift can reduce available payload

As one current provider example, SIXT lists at least 959 kg payload for its long 3.5-tonne panel-van group and at least 676 kg for its 3.5-tonne box group with tail lift. This is not a general market rule, but it shows why space and weight need separate checks.

03

At 3.5 tonnes, payload can matter more than volume

A 3.5-tonne box vehicle can provide a large cargo compartment while remaining within Category B. But the permitted gross vehicle mass still caps the total at 3,500 kg. Chassis, box body, tail lift, driver and equipment already consume part of that mass. With books, tiles, machines, drinks or other dense cargo, weight may be reached before the space is full.

04

Tail lift or rear doors: what is more useful for a move?

A tail lift can be especially useful for washing machines, dryers, heavy furniture or dollies. It does not replace safe lifting or load securing.

  • Tail lift: check whether it is included in the specific rental group and what capacity is stated.
  • Rear doors: can be simpler when most boxes and furniture are loaded by hand.
  • Loading height: without a tail lift, the actual height to the cargo floor matters.
  • Space behind the vehicle: an extended lift platform needs additional room, especially on narrow streets.

SIXT lists a 1,600 mm platform and a nominal capacity of 750 kg for its 3.5-tonne box groups with tail lift. This is a specific fleet example; the label on the actual lift remains decisive.

05

Can I drive a box van with a Category B licence in Germany?

Yes, if the actual vehicle has no more than 3,500 kg permitted gross vehicle mass and meets the other Category B conditions. The box body itself does not determine the licence. Larger box trucks at around 7.2 or 7.49 tonnes are outside normal Category B.

06

When does a box van suit your move?

Many stackable boxes

The rectangular body can make it easier to use the available space evenly.

Bulky furniture

The width and height can help with wardrobes, mattresses and larger individual items.

Heavy individual items

A tail lift can make loading easier, but payload and lift capacity still need separate checks.

If you mainly carry long objects or want a more compact vehicle, a large panel van may fit better. For more precise volume planning, use the van-size guide.

07

Before booking: do not infer equipment from the word “box”

“Box van” alone does not tell you whether the vehicle has a tail lift, rear doors, load rails or specific internal dimensions. Guaranteed payload can also differ between rental groups. Check the specific offer and ask for confirmation when critical dimensions or heavy cargo are involved.
