What should you prepare before loading?
First check the actual cargo-space dimensions, payload and available lashing points of the specific vehicle. Also plan which items must be loaded first and which need to remain accessible during the journey or immediately after arrival.
- Disassemble furniture where practical and label small parts
- Secure or remove drawers and doors
- Prepare enough straps, blankets and edge protectors
- Estimate the weight of heavy items
- Keep the loading route clear and brief helpers
In what order should a moving van be loaded?
- 1
Load heavy, stable items first and keep them low.
- 2
Position large furniture and appliances securely without ignoring axle and load limits.
- 3
Fill gaps with smaller, pressure-resistant boxes.
- 4
Load light and fragile items last and higher up.
- 5
Secure the load section by section rather than waiting until the van is completely full.
How must the load be secured?
Section 22 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) requires cargo and securing equipment to be stowed and secured so that they do not slide, tip, roll, fall or create avoidable noise even under emergency braking or sudden evasive manoeuvres. Driver responsibilities are also addressed in section 23 StVO.
- Use the vehicle’s lashing points and suitable straps
- Protect straps from sharp edges or use edge protectors
- Block objects that can roll
- Avoid voids or fill them with suitable material
- Recheck the securing after the first kilometres
How should furniture and household appliances be protected?
| Item | Preparation | When loading |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobes and chests | Empty them, secure doors and disassemble where practical | Support broad surfaces, protect edges and do not lash to handles |
| Washing machine | Remove water, secure hoses and use the transport lock as specified by the manufacturer | Transport upright and secure against tipping |
| Refrigerator | Empty, defrost and secure shelves | Follow manufacturer instructions for orientation and restarting |
| Mattresses and upholstery | Pack dry and clean | Do not use as the only means of load securing |
| TVs and electronics | Use original or close-fitting packaging where possible | Keep upright, impact-protected and without heavy loads on top |
Why is load volume alone not enough?
Load volume describes available space. Payload describes the additional weight the specific vehicle may carry. Books, tiles, tools or machinery can use up payload while there is still space left in the cargo area.
What should you check before departure?
- Doors and loading flaps fully closed
- No loose items in the cab or cargo area
- Visibility, mirrors and freedom of movement unobstructed
- Straps tensioned and lashing points used correctly
- Payload and tyre pressure checked against vehicle information
- Securing checked again after a short distance

Relevant help for this step
Heavy furniture or not enough helpers?
Loading is safety-critical. If strength, experience or time is missing, extra carrying help or a clearly scoped moving company can be the better option.
Frequently asked questions
Short and clear answers
Do all moving boxes need to be strapped down?+
Boxes must be stowed so that they cannot slide or tip. Whether this requires a strap, tight-fitting stacking or a combination depends on the cargo, vehicle and securing points.
Can a washing machine be transported on its side?+
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Many appliances are intended to be transported upright with the transport lock fitted. Remove residual water and secure hoses before loading.
Who is responsible for the load?+
Under section 23 StVO, the driver must ensure, among other things, that the vehicle and load comply with the rules and do not compromise road safety.
When should the load securing be retightened?+
An initial check is sensible after the first few kilometres and again after heavy braking or longer sections of driving.
