For larger vehicles, a branch dedicated to vans and trucks is often more practical in Stuttgart. Because of the local diesel rules, the exact emissions standard of the booked vehicle can matter as much as the pickup location.

Stuttgart: a green sticker may not be enough for an older diesel van

Stuttgart has been a low-emission zone since 2008 and vehicles generally need a green emissions sticker to drive and park in the city. Additional zonal diesel bans apply: diesel Euro 4/IV and worse have been excluded from the entire environmental zone since 2019.

In the smaller diesel-ban zone – the valley basin plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen – diesel Euro 5/V and worse are also restricted. The city currently states that Euro 6/VI diesel vehicles are not affected by these zonal bans. For a rental van, check both the sticker and the emissions standard of the actual vehicle.

Moving no-parking zone in Stuttgart: two-week application, three full days of signs

Stuttgart allows you to apply for a temporary parking closure/no-parking zone for a move. The city recommends submitting the application at least two weeks before the moving date. Reserving public parking spaces yourself does not replace the official permission.

Approved signs must be installed at least three full calendar days before use and the licence plates of vehicles legally parked there at that time must be recorded. Stuttgart currently states that moving-related permit fees are generally between €30 and €100 depending on duration and scope; sign rental or installation is separate.

Which vehicle class suits a move in Stuttgart?

Stuttgart does not change the cargo volume you need. Choose the class from the actual inventory, longest item, payload and interior dimensions rather than room count alone.

Then add the local check: will the vehicle height fit the yard, garage or access road, is there enough manoeuvring space, and does the chosen branch support that exact class?
