Hamburg covers a large area, so the shortest distance is not the only factor when choosing a branch. Check whether the required van class is actually available and whether 24-hour return or a different return branch is supported by your tariff.

SIXT operates a dedicated Hamburg Truck Center in Rothenburgsort with 24-hour pickup and return. Europcar lists a specialist van/truck branch in Bahrenfeld, while Avis lists Altona with 24-hour return. For a move, these differences can matter more than a few kilometres of branch distance.

Low-emission zone and diesel rules: what applies in Hamburg?

Hamburg currently has no low-emission zone. According to the official Hamburg vehicle-registration service, you therefore do not need an emissions sticker solely for driving within a Hamburg low-emission zone.

The former diesel through-traffic restrictions on Max-Brauer-Allee and Stresemannstraße were also lifted in September 2023. If your route leaves Hamburg, the destination city may of course have different low-emission or access rules.

Temporary no-parking zone: allow at least 14 days in Hamburg

For reserved loading space, Hamburg provides an official online service for temporary no-parking zones. The city currently requires applications at least 14 days before the intended setup; the administrative fee is stated as €30 to €200 depending on scope and duration.

The required traffic signs must be installed at least four days before the zone is used. The time and exact location of sign installation must be recorded in writing.

Which vehicle class suits a move in Hamburg?

Hamburg does not change the cargo volume you need. Choose the class from the actual inventory, longest item, payload and interior dimensions rather than room count alone.

Then add the local check: will the vehicle height fit the yard, garage or access road, is there enough manoeuvring space, and does the chosen branch support that exact class?

One-way rental and return: define the exact branch

For a move to or from Hamburg, returning the van to another branch can be useful. Availability and any surcharge depend on the provider, tariff and specific vehicle.

Especially for larger vehicles, do not treat “Hamburg” as a single return point. A central branch may not accept every vehicle class, and out-of-hours return must also be confirmed for the booking.
