Cologne low-emission zone: what should you check for a rental van?

Cologne’s expanded low-emission zone has applied since 1 October 2019 and, according to the city, now covers almost the entire urban area. Vehicles generally need a valid green emissions sticker or an applicable exemption to enter the designated zone.

Before driving, check that the specific rental van carries a valid green sticker and whether the pickup, destination and loading addresses lie inside the zone. Cologne also provides a street search for the zone, which is more reliable for boundary locations than guessing from the district name.

Temporary no-parking zone in Cologne: three-week lead time and 96-hour sign rule

If the moving van cannot be parked reliably at the loading address, Cologne allows an exemption and mobile temporary no-parking zone to be requested. The city recommends submitting the application at least three weeks before the move where possible.

According to the current city information, the mobile no-parking zone must be set up four days, or 96 hours, before the moving date. Cologne currently states a fee of €36 for the first moving day for the mobile no-parking zone; signs and any additional services are separate.
